Job Location: Charlotte, NC

Job Overview: A prominent law firm is seeking an experienced Associate Attorney or Patent Agent to join its Patent Prosecution & Litigation Practice Group, focusing on Electrical Engineering & Software. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in intellectual property (IP) law, specifically in patent prosecution and litigation, with expertise in computer science, electrical engineering, or similar fields. Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in the field of electrical engineering, software, and related technologies.
  • Represent clients in patent litigation, including preparation for trials, hearings, and settlement negotiations.
  • Provide strategic legal advice on intellectual property matters, including patent rights, infringements, and defenses.
  • Collaborate with clients and team members on complex technical issues related to patent law.
  • Manage patent portfolios and conduct patent prosecution and litigation strategies for clients.
  • Conduct legal research and draft legal documents, including opinions, briefs, and motions.

Requirements:

  • 2-6 years of experience in intellectual property law, particularly patent prosecution and litigation.
  • Must be admitted to the USPTO and possess a membership with the USPTO.
  • Experience in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related technical field is essential.
  • Prior experience with networking, software, and wireless networks (e.g., 3G/4G/5G) is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in North Carolina or be eligible for licensure.
  • California Bar membership is a plus.

Education:

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • A technical undergraduate degree (such as in electrical engineering, computer science, or a similar field) is highly preferred.

Certifications:

  • Must be a member of the USPTO.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Proficient in patent prosecution and litigation matters.
  • Knowledge of patent law, including licensing, IP strategies, and patent infringement analysis.
