A law firm in Washington, DC, is seeking a Patent Attorney with 1-4 years of experience in patent prosecution, particularly in software-related technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. The ideal candidate should be registered to practice before the USPTO, possess strong communication and writing skills, and demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct patentability searches and provide opinions on patent validity and infringement.
  • Interview inventors to gather necessary information for drafting patent applications.
  • Draft patent applications and responses to USPTO office actions.
  • Prosecute patent applications, including overcoming rejections under 35 U.S.C. §101.
  • Advise clients on patent strategy and portfolio management.
  • Conduct intellectual property due diligence and assessments.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • 1-4 years of experience in patent prosecution, preferably with a focus on software technologies.
  • Strong technical background in software, artificial intelligence, or machine learning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications related to software and emerging technologies.
  • Familiarity with patent laws and regulations, particularly 35 U.S.C. §101.
  • Prior law firm experience in intellectual property practice.
