Job Overview
A prominent law firm based in Washington, D.C. is seeking a skilled and seasoned attorney with expertise in international trade matters. This role involves comprehensive involvement in regulatory compliance, corporate transactions, and client advisement, focusing on areas such as import/export controls, tariff classifications, and trade preference programs. The attorney will have the opportunity to lead high-profile projects and work on cutting-edge international trade and corporate transaction issues.

Duties

  • Advise clients on compliance with U.S. import and export control laws, including customs valuation and tariff classifications.
  • Oversee corporate transactions that involve controlled technologies and international trade laws.
  • Represent clients in regulatory proceedings and secure necessary licenses and approvals.
  • Conduct in-depth legal research and analysis to ensure adherence to current trade regulations.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and finalize legal documents about international trade and corporate transactions.
  • Monitor developments in international trade laws and inform clients of significant changes or challenges.
  • Provide strategic guidance on free trade agreements, trade remedy duties, and related programs.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in corporate transactions, particularly involving international trade.
  • Proven knowledge in areas such as USMCA/NAFTA, countervailing duties (AD/CVD), and compliance with Section 301.
  • Admission to the Bar and active good standing in Michigan or the Washington, D.C. area.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Active State Bar membership in Michigan or Washington, D.C.

Skills

  • Advanced understanding of international trade regulations and trade preference programs.
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, and analytical abilities.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Effective communicator, capable of explaining intricate legal concepts clearly to clients.
  • Capacity for both independent work and collaboration with various stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of additional regulatory frameworks (e.g., ITAR, EAR, CFIUS, OFAC Sanctions) is advantageous.
