Job Overview:

A leading law firm is seeking a skilled and technically adept Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team. This role involves handling complex and highly sensitive patent prosecution tasks, particularly in the semiconductor industry. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing patent applications, drafting responses to communications from the USPTO, and supporting attorneys in providing efficient, high-quality legal services to clients. Duties:

  • Prepare draft patent applications, particularly focusing on incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices, addressing factual and scientific matters.
  • Communicate with clients and inventors to discuss the technical aspects of inventions and provide attorneys with detailed reports.
  • Serve as a liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office (PTO) throughout the patent application process.
  • Evaluate and report on the technological aspects of inventions, providing advice to attorneys on technologies as needed.
  • Draft, organize, analyze, review, and summarize technical documents.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, staff, vendors, and PTO personnel via email, phone, and in-person meetings.
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks to meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Identify and analyze complex patent issues, providing solutions where necessary.
  • Interact professionally with clients, colleagues, and office staff while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Provide guidance to legal support staff on specific patent-related issues.
  • Stay up-to-date on technological trends and offer recommendations regarding technology needs.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in the semiconductor industry.
  • USPTO registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office is preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and draw conclusions from research findings and technical data.
  • Proficiency in drafting complex patent documentation and understanding relevant patent law principles.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficient in using office software and various patent prosecution tools.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and manage confidential information with discretion.
  • Knowledge of project management strategies, time management, and meeting facilitation.
  • Willingness to travel as needed for client meetings or legal matters.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, including evenings and weekends, to meet workload peaks and deadlines.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field.

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration (preferred).
