Job Overview:
A law firm located in Hiawatha, IA is seeking a skilled Senior Associate Attorney with experience in bankruptcy, debt restructuring, and commercial law to join their growing team. The firm works closely with farmers and businesses, providing strategic legal services to help clients navigate financial challenges, manage debt, and achieve successful outcomes. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with experienced attorneys, engage in complex legal matters, and develop expertise in a specialized field.

Duties:

  • Maintain effective communication with clients, advisors, opposing counsel, courts, and other stakeholders.
  • Supervise and guide the firm’s professional staff in evaluating clients' financial, tax, and legal positions.
  • Assist clients in setting realistic goals and developing strategies to meet those objectives.
  • Represent clients during mediations, negotiations, depositions, and court proceedings, including in state, federal, and bankruptcy courts.
  • Conduct new client meetings (case evaluations) and advise clients on legal services offered by the firm.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience in bankruptcy and debt restructuring.
  • Proven track record in managing complex bankruptcy cases (at least five Chapter 11 or Chapter 12 plans or equivalent).
  • Ability to handle motions related to bankruptcy, such as motions to lift stay, motions to incur secured debt, motions to assume or reject leases and executory contracts, and plan objections.
  • Strong expertise in the areas of bankruptcy law, agricultural industry knowledge, and income tax implications for businesses in distress.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice in Iowa or ability to be licensed within a short period. Attorneys licensed in Illinois are also encouraged to apply.

Certifications:

  • Membership in the state bar association(s) as required for practice in Iowa.

Skills:

  • Strong negotiation and communication skills.
  • Ability to assess the impact of income taxes on distressed businesses.
  • Expertise in evaluating bankruptcy scenarios and determining the priority of liens on assets.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
