Job Overview

A law firm in Grand Rapids, MI, is seeking a highly skilled Tax Litigation Attorney with a robust background in tax court litigation and civil tax controversy. The ideal candidate will have extensive refund litigation experience and a strong track record in managing complex cases within federal and state courts. Experience with federal agencies such as the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the DOJ Tax Division is preferred. The successful candidate will be able to develop business and manage client relationships while demonstrating exceptional attention to detail and client service skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in tax court litigation and other tax-related legal matters.
  • Handle complex civil tax controversy cases with expertise in refund litigation.
  • Develop and manage a caseload, including supervision of client contact and case leadership.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects and deadlines, ensuring high levels of responsiveness and organization.
  • Maintain and build business development efforts, potentially including managing a portable business book with growth potential.
  • Collaborate with federal and state agencies, including the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the DOJ Tax Division, as necessary.
  • Provide exceptional client service and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in tax court litigation.
  • Extensive experience in civil tax controversy and refund litigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop business and manage client relationships.
  • Proven experience in handling complex cases within federal and state courts.
  • Prior experience with the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the DOJ Tax Division preferred.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and outstanding customer/client service skills.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Michigan Bar is required.
