Job Title: Patent Agent/Tech Advisor

Job Overview:
A well-established law firm in Washington, DC is seeking a qualified and motivated Patent Agent/Tech Advisor to join its thriving patent counseling and prosecution team. The role requires a blend of industry experience and legal knowledge to support patent prosecution, counseling, and litigation. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies across multiple disciplines, including chemical, material, mechanical, and biomedical engineering.

Duties:

  • Conduct prior art database searches to assess patentability and perform freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Review and analyze patent documents, scientific papers, and technical literature to support patent attorneys in prosecution, counseling, and litigation.
  • Draft patent applications and respond to office actions.
  • Collaborate with the legal team to provide strategic advice on patent-related matters.
  • Utilize knowledge in engineering disciplines to advise on complex technical issues in patent applications.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in a law firm or similar professional setting.
  • Substantial technical background in material, chemical, mechanical, or biomedical engineering (or a related field).
  • Excellent technical, written, and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Registered U.S. Patent Agent or eligibility to sit for the USPTO registration exam.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in material, chemical, mechanical, biomedical engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Advanced degree (Master’s, PhD) is a plus but not required.

Certifications:

  • U.S. Patent Agent registration or eligibility to take the USPTO registration exam.

Skills:

  • Expertise in patentability assessments and freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Strong technical knowledge across various engineering disciplines.
  • Proficiency in drafting patent applications and responding to office actions.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborative mindset with a proactive attitude.
