Job Overview:

A law firm based in Novi, MI, is seeking a highly skilled Tax Litigation Attorney with a strong background in tax court litigation and civil tax controversy. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in federal and state courts and have a proven track record of managing complex cases and developing client relationships. Experience with the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, or the DOJ Tax Division is preferred. The role demands exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in tax court litigation and civil tax controversy matters.
  • Managed and led cases from inception to resolution, overseeing client interactions and supervising case files.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships, including business development and managing a portable book of business.
  • Handle refund litigation matters and provide strategic legal advice to clients.
  • Work collaboratively with other attorneys and legal staff to ensure comprehensive case management.
  • Stay current with relevant laws, regulations, and legal developments in tax litigation.
  • Prepare legal briefs, arguments, and other documents required for litigation.
  • Negotiate settlements and represent clients in hearings and trials.
  • Maintain high levels of responsiveness to clients and ensure outstanding customer service.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects and deadlines concurrently.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in tax court litigation and civil tax controversy.
  • Proven experience in refund litigation matters.
  • Prior work experience with the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the DOJ Tax Division is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage client relationships, including a portable business book with growth potential.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong customer/client service skills.
  • Admission to the Michigan Bar is required.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Michigan Bar.
