A law firm in St. Louis, MI, is seeking a seasoned BIS, OFAC, and International Trade Lawyer. The successful candidate will have substantial experience with U.S. export controls, sanctions, customs, and other international trade-related regulations. This role requires expertise in a range of legal functions, including compliance audits, internal investigations, and responding to government enforcement actions. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional communication and writing skills, strong academic credentials, and prior experience in a large law firm.

Duties:

  • Provide expert legal advice on U.S. export controls (BIS), sanctions (OFAC), customs (including tariffs), and other international trade regulations.
  • Conduct and oversee compliance audits to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and refine compliance policies and procedures related to international trade.
  • Handle licensing matters, including preparing and submitting relevant filings and opinion work.
  • Manage internal investigations and respond to government enforcement actions with strategic legal guidance.
  • Deliver training and educational programs on compliance issues and regulatory changes to clients and internal teams.
  • Engage in investigations related to FCPA and national security matters (CFIUS), providing expert legal support and advice.
  • Collaborate with clients to navigate complex international trade issues and develop tailored legal solutions.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience in U.S. export controls (BIS), sanctions (OFAC), customs, and international trade regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle counseling, training, compliance audits, internal investigations, and enforcement responses.
  • Active membership in the DC Bar or willingness to apply for membership within 90 days of employment.
  • Experience with investigations related to FCPA and/or national security matters (CFIUS) is preferred.
  • Strong academic credentials from a top-tier U.S. law school (JD required).
  • Prior experience working in a large law firm is preferred.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a top-tier U.S. law school.

Certifications:

  • Active membership in the MI Bar, or willingness to apply for membership within 90 days of employment.

Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Expertise in international trade regulations and compliance.
  • Ability to develop and implement compliance policies and procedures.
