Job Overview: A leading law firm is seeking a highly qualified Patent Prosecution Associate to join their Intellectual Property Practice Group. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in patent drafting and prosecution, with experience in electrical engineering, computer science, or a similar field. This role is open to candidates from any of the firm’s office locations, and offers a dynamic environment for legal professionals passionate about intellectual property and patent law.

Location:

  • Palo Alto, CA

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications, focusing on electrical engineering, computer science, and software-related technologies.
  • Provide strategic legal counsel to clients on intellectual property matters, particularly in the areas of networking, software, and wireless technologies (e.g., 3G/4G/5G).
  • Manage client relationships and collaborate with internal legal teams to ensure the efficient handling of patent portfolios.
  • Conduct legal research related to patent applications and IP regulations.
  • Assist clients in navigating complex legal challenges in patent law, including design engineering for chip companies (preferred).
  • Stay updated on current trends in patent law, specifically related to electrical engineering and software technologies.

Requirements:

  • 2-6 years of experience in patent prosecution and intellectual property law.
  • Background in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Experience working with technologies such as networking, software, and wireless networks (e.g., 3G/4G/5G) is preferred.
  • Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Strong legal writing, analytical, and research skills.
  • Bar admission in California is a plus but not required.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school (for Associate applicants).
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related technical fields.

Certifications:

  • Active admission to the USPTO (required).
  • State Bar admission (required for Associates; Bar licensure in California is a plus).

Skills:

  • Strong technical understanding of electrical engineering, computer science, and software technologies.
  • Excellent communication and client management abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage patent portfolios and patent prosecution.
