Job Overview:
A reputable law firm in Ithaca, NY, is seeking a Trusts and Estates Associate Attorney to join their team. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with senior attorneys while providing comprehensive legal services to high-net-worth individuals, families, and businesses. The role includes a hybrid remote work option and requires regular travel to the firm’s other locations.

Duties:

  • Offer legal advice and representation in estate planning, trust administration, and probate matters.
  • Draft and review a variety of estate planning documents such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives.
  • Advise clients on strategies to minimize estate taxes and safeguard assets.
  • Assist with the administration of estates and trusts, including document preparation, asset distribution, and dispute resolution.
  • Stay current on developments in estate planning, tax law, and probate law.
  • Collaborate with clients’ financial advisors, accountants, and other professionals to develop estate planning strategies.
  • Represent clients in probate and trust administration court proceedings, as necessary.
  • Build and maintain client relationships through effective communication and understanding of their needs.

Requirements:

  • 4-6+ years of experience as a trusts and estates attorney.
  • Admission to the New York Bar (or ability to waive in).
  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the Bar.
  • Proven experience drafting estate planning documents and handling complex estate and trust administration.
  • Experience with estate, gift, and fiduciary income tax returns.
  • Experience representing fiduciaries and beneficiaries in probate court.
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new information.
  • Professional, cooperative, and positive attitude with a flexible approach to working with diverse personalities.
  • Military experience is a plus.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active membership in the New York State Bar (or eligibility to waive in).

Skills:

  • Drafting estate planning documents and trust administration.
  • Estate, gift, and fiduciary income tax return preparation.
  • Probate court experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
