Job Overview

A growing criminal defense law firm is seeking a dedicated Associate Attorney to join its team. Duties

  • Conduct legal research to develop strong criminal defense arguments.
  • Negotiate with prosecutors and other opposing parties to secure favorable outcomes for clients.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, legal assistants, and support staff on case strategy and client management.
  • Draft motions, pleadings, and legal correspondence with clarity and precision.
  • Maintain strong client relationships by explaining legal concepts in simple terms and demonstrating empathy for clients' situations.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with opposing counsel, judges, and court officials.
  • Keep client files updated with case status, deadlines, and developments using the firm's case management system (Clio).
  • Manage multiple criminal defense cases, handling smaller matters independently and assisting with larger cases as second chair.
  • Represent clients in court hearings, motions, plea negotiations, and trials.
  • Attend Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses and participate in networking opportunities to further professional development.

Requirements

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Admission to the bar in the jurisdiction(s) where the attorney practices (District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, or Maryland).
  • SFST training and certification (preferred but not required).

  • Strong research, writing, and legal analysis skills.
  • Effective courtroom representation, including hearings, motions, and trials.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills with the ability to work with clients, opposing counsel, and the judiciary.
  • Ability to manage a caseload and meet deadlines independently.
