Job Overview
A prestigious law firm in Chicago is seeking a skilled and experienced Professional Responsibility Counsel (PRC) to work directly with the co-General Counsel. This role will focus on handling professional responsibility issues, business intake processes, and ensuring compliance with applicable professional conduct rules, firm policies, and client engagement terms. The PRC will provide counsel on ethical and liability matters, support attorneys with conflict resolution, and assist in drafting legal documentation.

Duties

  • Collaborate with the co-General Counsel on reviewing and approving new business intake, professional responsibility concerns, and liability issues.
  • Stay current with the American Bar Association’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct and relevant state rules.
  • Evaluate conflict screening reports and advise on potential ethical and business concerns, providing recommendations for resolution.
  • Assist with conflict resolution and the drafting/reviewing of conflict waivers.
  • Aid attorneys in drafting engagement letters and obtaining necessary approvals.
  • Review the prior work histories of potential hires to identify potential conflicts and offer solutions.
  • Analyze outside counsel guidelines and requests for proposals.
  • Support the co-General Counsel with responses to subpoenas and document production as required.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as directed by the co-General Counsel.

Requirements

  • Authorized to practice law in IL.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a law practice or a position focused on professional responsibility matters (experience in large law firms and litigation is preferred).
  • Proven ability to assess ethical, business, and liability issues in a legal context.
  • Strong understanding of conflict resolution processes and professional conduct rules.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Active Bar membership in IL

Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of professional responsibility and ethics rules, including the ABA Model Rules and state-specific regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to advise and collaborate effectively with attorneys and staff.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution abilities.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multitasking skills.
