Job Overview:
A well-established law firm is seeking an experienced Intellectual Property (IP) Associate to join its IP group. The ideal candidate should have expertise in software, computer science, electrical, or mechanical engineering with a focus on patent preparation and prosecution. The successful individual will work with seasoned patent professionals in a collaborative, dynamic environment and have the opportunity to contribute to a diverse array of IP matters, including patent applications, patentability opinions, and patent estate management.

Location:

  • Philadelphia

Duties:

  • Handle strategic aspects of multiple legal matters, from inception to conclusion.
  • Communicate effectively with both internal attorneys and external clients.
  • Work independently, producing high-quality legal work while meeting billable hour requirements.
  • Contribute to business generation efforts, both individually and as part of the team.
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards in the legal profession.
  • Manage and oversee junior associates or support staff to ensure client satisfaction.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience as a licensed attorney, preferably within a law firm.
  • Strong background in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in software, computer science, electrical, or mechanical fields.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of legal matters simultaneously and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail and interpersonal skills for client and attorney communication.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) required.
  • A Bachelor’s or higher degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science is preferred.

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in good standing in one or more jurisdictions where the firm operates.
  • Must maintain applicable license renewal and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.
  • Registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) required.

Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Independent decision-making ability with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lead and delegate within client teams.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with new technologies and IP developments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, and take on leadership roles in client matters.
