Job Overview:
A well-established law firm is seeking a midlevel associate with 1-5 years of patent prosecution experience in the biotechnology sector, particularly in life sciences technologies. The position offers the opportunity to work on high-profile biotechnology patents, and candidates should be prepared to take the patent bar exam within their first 12 months if not already registered.

Duties:

  • Provide patent prosecution services in biotechnology and life sciences technologies, including drafting and filing patent applications.
  • Conduct patentability assessments and manage patent portfolios.
  • Advise clients on intellectual property strategy, particularly related to life sciences innovations.
  • Work closely with clients to identify and protect their intellectual property in a competitive market.
  • Prepare for and take the patent bar exam if not already registered.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of biotechnology developments and patent law changes.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and senior attorneys on complex patent matters.
  • Build and maintain client relationships, offering legal counsel and advice.

Requirements:

  • 1-5 years of experience in patent prosecution, with a focus on biotechnology and life sciences.
  • Advanced degree in a life sciences field (Ph.D. preferred).
  • Active registration with the USPTO (Patent Bar).
  • Ability to prepare for and take the patent bar exam within the first 12 months if not yet registered.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with life sciences technologies and understanding of their patent landscape.
  • Ability to manage multiple patent matters simultaneously and work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a team.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a life sciences-related field.

Certifications:

  • Active USPTO registration (Patent Bar).
  • California State Bar membership preferred but not required.

Skills:

  • Expertise in patent prosecution, particularly for biotechnology and life sciences.
  • Strong drafting and analytical skills for patent applications.
  • Ability to assess patentability and provide strategic IP advice.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in handling complex IP matters and working directly with clients.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
