A law firm in Chicago, IL, is seeking a highly qualified BIS, OFAC, and International Trade Lawyer. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience with U.S. export controls, sanctions, customs, and other international trade regulations. This role involves counseling, training, compliance audits, and responding to enforcement actions. Strong communication and writing skills, as well as a strong academic background, are essential. Experience with FCPA and national security matters (CFIUS) is preferred, and prior work within a large law firm is advantageous.

Duties:

  • Provide expert legal guidance on U.S. export controls (BIS), sanctions (OFAC), customs (including tariffs), and other international trade regulations.
  • Conduct compliance audits to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Develop, implement, and update compliance policies and procedures related to international trade and sanctions.
  • Handle licensing matters, including preparation and submission of relevant filings and opinion work.
  • Manage and lead internal investigations and respond effectively to government enforcement actions.
  • Deliver training programs on compliance issues, regulatory changes, and best practices to clients and internal teams.
  • Engage in investigations related to FCPA and national security matters (CFIUS), providing expert legal support and strategic advice.
  • Collaborate with clients to address complex international trade and regulatory issues and provide tailored legal solutions.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience in U.S. export controls (BIS), sanctions (OFAC), customs, and international trade regulations.
  • Proven ability to handle counseling, training, compliance audits, internal investigations, and enforcement responses.
  • Active member of the DC Bar or willingness to apply for membership within 90 days of employment.
  • Experience with investigations related to FCPA and/or national security matters (CFIUS) is preferred.
  • Strong academic credentials from a top-tier U.S. law school (JD required).
  • Prior work experience within a large law firm is preferred.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a top-tier U.S. law school.

Certifications:

  • Active membership in the DC Bar, or willingness to apply for membership within 90 days of employment.

Skills:

  • Expertise in international trade regulations and compliance.
