A law firm in San Francisco is seeking an experienced Patent Agent with a strong technical background in biological or pharmaceutical sciences. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in patent prosecution, including conducting prior art searches and freedom to operate analyses. Excellent academic credentials, as well as written and verbal communication skills, are essential for success in this role.

Duties:

  • Conduct prior art searches and perform freedom to operate analyses to support patentability assessments.
  • Analyze patents and scientific literature to assist in patent preparation, prosecution, and counseling.
  • Prepare and file patent applications, including drafting claims, specifications, and other necessary documents.
  • Interact with clients to gather technical information and provide strategic patent advice.
  • Respond to Office Actions and other correspondence from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Collaborate with attorneys and clients to address patent-related issues and strategies.
  • Stay updated on developments in patent law and technical advancements in relevant fields.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of patent prosecution experience.
  • A Ph.D. or M.S. in cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, virology, chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacy, or a related technical field.
  • Technical background in biological or pharmaceutical sciences preferred.
  • Experience conducting prior art searches, analyzing patents, and reviewing scientific papers.
  • Strong academic record with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required.
  • Graduate and undergraduate transcripts and a writing sample will be required.

Education:

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in a relevant technical field (cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, virology, chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacy, or equivalent discipline).

Certifications:

  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Skills:

  • Broad technical knowledge in biological or pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Proficiency in conducting prior art searches and freedom to operate analyses.
