Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm located in New York City, NY is seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Patent Agent with specialized expertise in chemical sciences. The position requires a robust understanding of patent prosecution and a scientific background rooted in chemistry or a closely related field. The role supports the firm’s intellectual property team in securing patent rights, evaluating technologies, and navigating complex IP challenges for innovative clients.

Duties:

  • Draft technical descriptions and related materials for patent applications

  • Respond to patent office communications involving scientific and factual issues

  • Assess the technical underpinnings of new inventions and articulate findings to attorneys and inventors

  • Engage directly with inventors to extract key scientific concepts and innovations

  • Research emerging technologies to support IP strategy development

  • Provide insights on patentability, freedom-to-operate, and IP landscape reviews

  • Interface with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office during the application lifecycle

  • Support due diligence efforts and IP portfolio evaluations for transactions

  • Stay informed on developments in patent law and maintain active technical knowledge

  • Ensure timely data management related to patent processes and internal reporting

Requirements:

  • 1-4 years of relevant patent experience

  • Prior involvement in drafting and prosecuting patent applications

  • Experience with IP transactions or PTAB proceedings (a plus, not mandatory)

  • Familiarity with U.S. and international patent procedures

  • Availability for occasional extended hours, including evenings or weekends, as needed

  • A minimum of 3 days per week is required in-office; remote work available up to 2 days per week

Education:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Chemical Engineering

Certifications:

  • Registered or eligible to register with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex scientific information

  • Proficiency in drafting patent documents and evaluating prior art

  • Clear and persuasive communicator, both in writing and verbally

  • Technically adept with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)

  • Comfortable using docketing and workflow management software

  • Exceptional time management, prioritization, and organizational skills

  • Professional demeanor and capacity to work with diverse teams and clients

  • Commitment to confidentiality and adherence to ethical standards
