Job Overview:

A distinguished law firm based in Hartford, CT is seeking a seasoned Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team, with a strong emphasis on innovation in the life sciences domain. This role involves a collaborative approach to protecting and managing cutting-edge biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical device inventions. The selected candidate will work closely with legal professionals across disciplines to craft and execute patent strategies that align with client objectives and global protection needs.

Duties:

  • Analyze scientific innovations to determine patent eligibility and strategic fit within existing portfolios

  • Prepare, draft, and file U.S. patent applications in collaboration with inventors and technical teams

  • Manage domestic patent prosecution and coordinate filings with international counterparts

  • Support IP due diligence investigations, portfolio assessments, and competitive landscape analysis

  • Conduct comprehensive legal and technical research relating to patent law and evolving technologies

  • Guide internal teams and clients on intellectual property strategies and filing approaches

  • Act as a liaison between departments and external counsel on cross-functional initiatives

Requirements:

  • At least 4 years of experience in patent drafting and prosecution in a law firm or corporate legal department

  • Demonstrated expertise in life sciences-related technologies, especially in biotech, pharma, or med devices

  • Proven ability to independently manage patent matters and contribute to team-driven strategies

  • Familiarity with patent processes across mechanical or electrical domains is considered advantageous

  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and technical writing ability

Education:

  • Doctorate (Ph.D.) in a life sciences-related field such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), or currently eligible to sit for the Patent Bar

Skills:

  • Strong foundation in scientific and technical subject matter related to the life sciences

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Ability to operate effectively within cross-disciplinary legal teams

  • Comfortable managing multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment

  • Proficient in legal research tools and patent-related databases
