The ideal candidate will possess experience in both environmental and land use law, demonstrating a strong commitment to public interest. This role involves investigating, developing, and enforcing legal and regulatory issues related to the permitting and approval of large-scale projects. The attorney will work closely with supervising attorneys and staff to manage a variety of legal tasks and represent clients before various regulatory and governmental bodies.

Duties:

  • Investigate and develop legal and regulatory issues associated with the permitting and approval of large-scale industrial, electric utility, residential, and commercial projects.
  • Conduct factual investigations, legal research, and case development.
  • Review records, work with scientists, and perform legal analysis and writing.
  • Engage in oral advocacy, motion practice, and brief writing.
  • Represent clients before federal and state administrative and regulatory agencies, municipalities, and other local governmental agencies.
  • Participate in settlement negotiations and represent clients in court.
  • Engage in general rulemaking and regulatory proceedings, as well as state and local legislative hearings.
  • Collaborate with supervising attorneys and professional staff on complex cases and projects.
  • Stay informed on relevant environmental and land use regulations and case law.

Requirements:

  • 1-5 years of substantive experience practicing environmental law in California.
  • Experience with land use law and related regulatory issues.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the public interest.
  • Proven ability to handle a range of legal tasks, from investigation to advocacy.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Admitted to practice law in California.

Skills:

  • Excellent research, analytic, writing, and communication skills.
  • Strong ability to conduct legal research and develop complex cases.
  • Effective oral advocacy skills and experience with motion practice and brief writing.
  • Ability to represent clients before administrative, regulatory, and governmental agencies.
