Job Overview: A law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Prosecution Associate Attorney or Of Counsel with at least 5+ years of biotechnology experience to join its Intellectual Property (IP) Group in the New York office. This role involves preparing and prosecuting patent applications, conducting IP due diligence, and providing patent landscape and freedom-to-operate analyses. The ideal candidate will also mentor junior patent agents and take on significant responsibility in managing client matters.

Location:

Duties:

  • Prepare and prosecute biotechnology-related patent applications.
  • Perform patent landscape, freedom-to-operate, noninfringement, and invalidity analyses.
  • Conduct intellectual property (IP) due diligence for clients.
  • Mentor and guide junior patent agents.
  • Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, and patent offices.
  • Take responsibility for managing client matters and developing strategies.
  • Collaborate with the IP team and contribute to the firm’s IP practice.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience in biotechnology-related patent prosecution.
  • Advanced degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, or pharmacology.
  • Admission to the U.S. Patent Bar.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, research, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent academic and professional credentials.
  • Ability to manage client relationships and lead matters independently.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, or pharmacology.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the U.S. Patent Bar.
  • Active membership in good standing with a State Bar.

Skills:

  • Strong drafting, research, and analytical skills for patent prosecution and IP matters.
  • Ability to work independently and manage significant responsibilities.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for client interactions and negotiations.
  • Leadership skills for mentoring junior team members.
