Job Overview

A law firm in Houston, TX, is seeking a qualified Patent Agent to support their patent prosecution practice. The Patent Agent will assist clients in protecting their technology by drafting and prosecuting patent applications through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and supporting due diligence efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications through the USPTO.
  • Conduct patent searches and analyze patentability, freedom-to-operate, and infringement issues.
  • Prepare responses to office actions, amendments, and other correspondence with the USPTO.
  • Assist with due diligence activities, including patent portfolio analysis and review.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and clients to understand their technological needs and provide strategic patent advice.
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines efficiently, coordinating with partners and clients.

Requirements:

  • 2-4 years of experience in patent prosecution or a related field.
  • Must possess a Master’s Degree or Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry, applied chemistry, polymer science, polymer engineering, biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO; Patent Bar eligibility required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle assignments from multiple partners and clients.

Education:

  • Master’s Degree or Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry, applied chemistry, polymer science, polymer engineering, biochemistry, or a related field.

Certifications:

  • USPTO Registration (Patent Bar eligible).

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent law and USPTO procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
