A law firm seeks an experienced Health Privacy Associate to join its Data, Privacy, and Cybersecurity Practice in San Francisco. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside an elite team, advising cutting-edge digital health companies on a wide range of privacy and security matters. The ideal candidate will have expertise in HIPAA and other health-related privacy laws and a passion for guiding clients through the complexities of the ever-evolving legal landscape in health technology. Additionally, the associate may also have the opportunity to engage in non-health-related privacy and cybersecurity matters.

Duties:

  • Provide legal counsel to health and life sciences companies on privacy and security issues, including HIPAA compliance and data protection regulations.
  • Collaborate with attorneys from different practice areas to deliver practical, dynamic solutions to clients in the digital health space.
  • Advise on health-related privacy regulations and laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, HITECH, and state-specific privacy laws.
  • Assist in developing privacy compliance programs for technology-driven health and life sciences companies.
  • Work on evolving legal matters related to data privacy, cybersecurity, and technology, with opportunities to advise on general privacy issues across various sectors.
  • Work with clients ranging from startups to large global public companies.
  • Stay informed about the latest trends and changes in health privacy regulations, providing timely advice to clients.

Requirements:

  • 3 to 6 years of experience in health privacy, including expertise in HIPAA and other health-related privacy and security laws.
  • Prior experience working with technology or digital health companies is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex legal matters in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving area of law.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to simplify complex legal concepts for clients.
  • Keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent academic credentials and a strong interest in technology and innovation.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and with clients to develop practical and dynamic solutions.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active membership in the California Bar (or eligible for admission).

Skills:

  • Deep knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, and other health privacy laws.
  • Ability to provide practical advice to clients on navigating complex privacy and security issues.
  • Strong drafting skills, with experience creating privacy policies, compliance documents, and legal opinions.
  • Interest and experience in data privacy and cybersecurity law beyond the healthcare sector.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and provide leadership on client matters.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and the ability to think strategically.
