Job Overview:
A highly respected law firm is seeking an experienced Biotechnology Patent Prosecution Associate or Of Counsel to join its thriving chemical and biotechnology patent prosecution practice. The position offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of patent prosecution matters within the biological, biotechnology, chemical, and pharmaceutical fields, representing quality domestic and foreign clients. This role requires a strong background in patent prosecution and the ability to work collaboratively within a team of professionals.

Location:

  • Washington, DC

Duties:

  • Handle patent prosecution matters in the biological, biotechnology, chemical, and pharmaceutical fields
  • Represent domestic and international clients in patent applications and post-grant proceedings
  • Conduct patentability analyses and provide strategic advice on patent portfolios
  • Manage and coordinate filings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications
  • Provide legal opinions on patentability, freedom to operate, and validity
  • Participate in PTAB post-grant proceedings
  • Collaborate with a team of attorneys and clients to develop patent strategies

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience in chemical or biotechnology patent prosecution, PTAB post-grant proceedings, and/or providing legal opinions
  • Must be registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • Strong academic credentials and experience in patent law
  • Advanced degree in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a related field is strongly preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical abilities and attention to detail
  • Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment

Education:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a relevant scientific field is highly preferred

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Skills:

  • Expertise in biotechnology, chemical, and pharmaceutical patent prosecution
  • Strong knowledge of patent law and post-grant proceedings
  • Advanced scientific knowledge in relevant fields (biology, chemistry, etc.)
  • Excellent legal research, drafting, and analytical skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical information
  • Strong team collaboration and client relationship management
