Job Overview: A law firm seeks a Tax Controversy Associate Attorney to represent clients in federal and state tax controversies. This role will involve managing voluntary disclosure cases, audits, appeals, mediation, amnesty filings, and other tax-related matters.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in tax controversy cases, including audits, appeals, and mediation.
  • Manage voluntary disclosure cases, including streamlined foreign offshore filings and IRS Criminal Investigation Voluntary Disclosure Practice submissions.
  • Handle tax court cases, collections, and competent authority requests.
  • Prepare written responses to governmental authorities and resolve clients' tax issues.
  • Review federal and state income tax returns and international informational reporting forms.
  • Interpret tax laws and prepare documentation for various tax matters.
  • Build rapport with IRS agents and other governmental personnel to favorably settle client tax matters.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel for tax, interest, and penalty assessments and Microsoft PowerPoint for entity and flow charts.

Requirements:

  • 2-6 years of experience in a law or CPA firm, with demonstrable tax controversy experience.
  • Experience with tax court clerkships, IRS audits, voluntary disclosures, or collections matters.
  • International tax experience (e.g., FBARs, PFICs, CFCs) is a plus.
  • Proficient in reviewing tax returns and associated documentation.

Education:

  • JD required; LLM, CPA, or MS in Taxation preferred.
  • Admitted to the CT Bar or willing to take/waive into the CT Bar.

Certifications:

  • CPA or other relevant certifications are a plus.

Skills:

  • Strong research, drafting, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Excellent project management and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Comfortable with phone, video, and in-person communication with government officials and clients.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
