Job Overview

A prominent law firm is seeking an Innovation Counsel to join its Practice Innovation team. This position focuses on transforming legal service delivery through the use of legal technology, data, and process design. Reporting to the Lead Innovation Counsel, the Innovation Counsel will help lead cross-functional initiatives aimed at optimizing legal workflows, increasing efficiency, and enhancing the client experience. The role involves close collaboration with attorneys, practice support teams, and innovation specialists to implement tools, playbooks, and processes tailored to specific practice group needs.

Duties

  • Support legal technology adoption initiatives within practice groups by providing strategic legal input

  • Design playbooks and training resources to support innovation technologies and best practices

  • Prepare presentations, status updates, and executive briefings

  • Partner with legal operations, IT, and practice leadership to prioritize innovation initiatives

  • Collaborate with project teams to establish objectives, success metrics, and timelines

  • Evaluate current operational workflows and recommend technology-based improvements

  • Lead legal technology pilots, experiments, and deployments

  • Coordinate with change management teams on communication and adoption strategies

  • Maintain and develop scalable practice-specific resources in collaboration with engineering teams

  • Contribute to evolving innovation needs and firmwide technology initiatives

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in legal practice or in a legal technology-focused role

  • Active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar or registered in-house counsel status

  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends as needed

  • Willingness to travel for collaboration, implementation, or training

  • Proven experience working across departments, including legal, operations, and IT

  • Familiarity with large law firm operations, staffing, and financial models

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or international equivalent

Certifications

  • Current, active bar membership in one or more U.S. jurisdictions (including office jurisdiction if applicable)

Skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with legal professionals and executives

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal software such as iManage

  • Knowledge of tools commonly used in large law firms, including:

    • NetDocs or iManage

    • Elite 3E

    • Intapp

    • Litera, Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis

  • Experience with AI and emerging legal tech tools

  • Ability to design and lead presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Exposure to alternative legal service providers and managed service models

  • Proficient in analyzing technology usage and interpreting data metrics

  • Strategic mindset with a strong attention to detail and a collaborative approach

  • Ability to navigate complex environments and influence across departments

  • Capable of translating legal needs into tech-enabled solutions
