Job Overview

A prestigious law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to join their Patent Prosecution & Litigation Practice Group. The role is available for individuals with expertise in Electrical Engineering & Software or Mechanical disciplines, and it offers the opportunity to work in multiple office locations. The firm is looking for candidates who have between 3 to 6 years of patent prosecution experience, with a background in engineering, mathematics, or physics. Successful candidates will have a passion for intellectual property law and a commitment to high-quality work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Duties

  • Handle patent prosecution matters including drafting and filing patent applications, responding to office actions, and managing patent portfolios.
  • Assist in patent litigation, including drafting pleadings, conducting legal research, and supporting discovery efforts.
  • Provide counsel on patent strategy and risk analysis to clients in the electrical engineering, software, and mechanical fields.
  • Interact with clients, inventors, and legal teams to resolve patent-related issues.
  • Maintain registration with the USPTO and manage correspondence with patent examiners.

Requirements

  • 3 to 6 years of patent prosecution experience, including application drafting.
  • Experience in patent litigation is a plus.
  • A degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field such as mathematics or physics.
  • Knowledge and experience with other forms of intellectual property (IP) is an advantage.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical abilities.
  • All candidates must be registered with the USPTO.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Advanced degrees (Masters or Ph.D.) in relevant fields are a plus but not required.

Certifications

  • USPTO Registration (required).

Skills

  • Patent prosecution and litigation experience, particularly in the electrical engineering, software, or mechanical fields.
  • Excellent legal writing and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with IP laws and practices related to patents, especially in high-tech industries.
  • Proficiency in patent databases, legal research tools, and MS Office suite.
