Job Overview:
A law firm is seeking a skilled and motivated Tax Controversy Associate Attorney with 4-6 years of relevant experience to join its New York office. The ideal candidate will have a background in handling complex tax controversy matters, including audits, appeals, and litigation, with a specific focus on international tax issues. This position requires strong research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as a commitment to providing high-quality client service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in tax controversy matters, including IRS and state tax audits and administrative appeals.
  • Advise clients on complex international tax issues and cross-border transactions.
  • Prepare and file petitions in the U.S. Tax Court and represent clients in federal and state tax litigation.
  • Handle all phases of tax controversy from initial audit through trial and resolution.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis related to tax controversy and international tax law.
  • Draft legal documents, pleadings, motions, and briefs for submission in court and administrative proceedings.
  • Work closely with clients to develop tax strategies and resolve tax disputes efficiently and effectively.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and guide tax compliance and advisory matters.
  • Keep up to date with changes in tax laws and regulations at the federal, state, and international levels.

Requirements:

  • 4-6 years of experience in tax controversy, including IRS and state tax audits and appeals.
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • LLM in Taxation is required.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the state of New York.
  • Strong background in tax litigation, with experience representing clients in U.S. Tax Court or similar forums.
  • Proven experience with international tax issues and cross-border transactions.
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Strong academic record.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to manage multiple cases and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent client communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proficiency with legal research tools, such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.
  • Knowledge of tax compliance software and case management tools.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the New York State Bar (required).
