Job Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Immigration Attorney on behalf of a criminal defense law firm. This position is based in Los Angeles, CA, and offers a hybrid work arrangement. The attorney will handle a caseload of Affirmative Asylum and EOIR Removal Proceedings, including defensive asylum cases, appeals, motions to reopen, and cancellations of removal. The successful candidate will develop and implement case strategies, ensure compliance with immigration laws, and lead a support team of paralegals and legal assistants. This role offers an exciting opportunity for attorneys passionate about immigration law and helping clients navigate complex legal situations.

Duties:

  • Manage a caseload of Affirmative Asylum and EOIR Removal Proceeding cases, including defensive asylum cases, appeals, motions to reopen, and cancellation of removal.
  • Develop and implement case strategies after assessing clients' backgrounds and applying immigration law and procedures.
  • Identify and assess eligibility for non-asylum relief, including USCIS applications.
  • Review and approve petitions, motions, and other filings before submission to courts or immigration agencies.
  • Draft and file case briefs and motions, including protected grounds & nexus statements, BIA and 9th circuit briefs, motions to reopen, motions to reconsider, and eligibility briefs.
  • Review clients' criminal backgrounds, prepare attorney declarations for motions to vacate, and assess the criminal history chart.
  • Prepare for and conduct Master Hearings, Individual Hearings, and other contested hearings both in-person and through Webex.
  • Ensure all case deadlines are met, and cases are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Meet with clients and prepare them for court hearings, including trial preparation.
  • Lead a team of paralegals and legal assistants, providing guidance, answering legal questions, and ensuring timely case resolution.
  • Provide legal guidance to other departments as needed.
  • Deliver exceptional client service throughout the case duration.

Requirements:

  • Active bar license in any U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 2+ years of experience practicing EOIR immigration law.
  • Experience with detained cases is preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with EOIR court systems, including ECAS and Webex.
  • Ability to handle a fully electronic caseload.
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual Spanish speaker preferred but not required.
