Job Overview

A highly regarded law firm is seeking an Intellectual Property Associate with a strong academic and technical background in Chemistry to join its Intellectual Property practice group. This position is ideal for candidates with 1–4 years of experience in patent prosecution, particularly those with exposure to pharmaceutical technologies. The role offers an opportunity to contribute to complex and high-impact IP matters within a collaborative and innovative legal environment.

Duties

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields

  • Prepare responses to Office Actions and handle ongoing communications with the USPTO

  • Conduct IP due diligence, including freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses

  • Assist with the preparation of legal opinions (e.g., non-infringement, invalidity)

  • Collaborate with litigation teams on the technical aspects of intellectual property disputes

  • Advise clients on patent strategy and portfolio development

Requirements

  • 1–4 years of experience in patent prosecution, preferably in pharmaceutical technologies

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. patent laws and USPTO procedures

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Authorized to work in the United States

Education

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) required in one of the following fields:

    • Chemistry

    • Organic Chemistry

    • Medicinal Chemistry

    • Biochemistry

    • Chemical Engineering

Certifications

  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) or eligible to sit for the patent bar

Skills

  • Proficiency in patent drafting and prosecution strategies

  • Familiarity with IP diligence practices, including clearance and opinion work

  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex scientific and legal concepts

  • Experience supporting IP litigation efforts is preferred

  • Strong research and analytical thinking abilities
