A law firm seeks an experienced and highly skilled Patent Agent to join their Intellectual Property team in Boston. The successful candidate will have a strong background in life sciences patent preparation and prosecution, coupled with an advanced scientific degree. This full-time role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects and contribute to the development of IP strategies in the life sciences sector.

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in the life sciences field, particularly focusing on chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, and related disciplines.
  • Conduct patentability analyses and prepare detailed legal opinions.
  • Collaborate with legal professionals and clients to develop patent strategies tailored to specific needs.
  • Review and assess existing patents for potential infringements, handling technical aspects of patent portfolios.
  • Provide legal counsel and support to clients on matters related to intellectual property, with a focus on life sciences technologies.
  • Stay informed on recent trends in both the life sciences industry and intellectual property law to ensure best practices in patent prosecution.
  • Work alongside senior attorneys and clients to establish and maintain IP protection for discoveries and innovations.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in life sciences patent preparation and prosecution.
  • Strong proficiency in intellectual property law, specifically with a focus on patent law in the life sciences sector.
  • Solid understanding of the patent application process, from preparation through prosecution.
  • Proven ability to analyze scientific data and apply legal standards to the patentability of innovations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear legal language.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently in a fast-paced environment.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent preferred) in chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, chemical engineering, or related scientific fields.

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Skills:

  • Exceptional technical writing ability, particularly in the context of patent drafting.
  • Expertise in intellectual property laws, especially in patent law.
  • Strong research skills and the ability to navigate complex scientific and legal challenges.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain client relationships.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
