Job Overview:

A law firm seeks an experienced Environmental and Land Use Associate Attorney to join its team in Northern California, with hybrid remote work options available in either the South San Francisco or Sacramento office. This role involves advocating for sustainable development that minimizes environmental impacts while maximizing community benefits. The ideal candidate will have 3-6 years of experience in land use and environmental law, with a strong commitment to serving the public interest and working collaboratively in a diverse and inclusive work environment.

Duties:

  • Conduct legal research, case development, and factual investigations on environmental and land use issues.
  • Develop and enforce legal and regulatory strategies for large-scale projects, including industrial, utility, residential, and commercial developments.
  • Prepare and draft legal briefs, motions, and other court filings.
  • Represent clients in hearings, settlement negotiations, and before administrative, regulatory, and municipal agencies.
  • Collaborate with scientists, experts, and other professionals to build and support case strategies.
  • Advocate for clients in rulemaking and regulatory proceedings, as well as state and local legislative hearings.
  • Travel as required for case work, meetings, hearings, and educational seminars.

Requirements:

  • 3-6 years of substantive experience practicing environmental and land use law in California.
  • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Excellent judgment, initiative, and a demonstrated work ethic.
  • Commitment to advocating for sustainable development and mitigating environmental harm.
  • Ability to work well within a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team environment.
  • Willingness to travel for hearings, client meetings, and case-related work.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active membership in the California State Bar.

Skills:

  • Proficient in legal research, case development, and drafting legal documents.
  • Strong oral and written advocacy skills.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and land use planning in California.
