Job Overview:
A respected law firm based in Stamford, CT is seeking a highly skilled Patent Agent with a strong scientific background to join its expanding team focused on intellectual property protection and strategy. The role centers on guiding the development, prosecution, and management of patent portfolios in the biotechnology and life sciences domains. Acting as a strategic partner, the Patent Agent will work cross-functionally with legal professionals and scientific innovators to secure and safeguard groundbreaking technologies.

Duties:

  • Analyze inventions for potential protection and assess technical documentation to determine patentability

  • Prepare and draft original U.S. patent applications with a focus on life sciences innovations

  • Manage prosecution of U.S. patent applications and interface with international counsel to support foreign filings

  • Support due diligence reviews and contribute to patent portfolio strategy and analysis

  • Conduct in-depth research into the scientific literature and IP precedents to support filings and legal opinions

  • Participate in internal strategy sessions and collaborate with legal teams, inventors, and business leaders

  • Serve as an internal liaison across departments and maintain active communication with external counsel

Requirements:

  • At least 4 years of direct experience in patent prosecution within either a legal or corporate environment

  • Proficiency in handling patents in life sciences, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or medical device sectors

  • Familiarity with international patent processes and cross-border coordination

  • Exposure to additional technologies such as mechanical or electrical innovations is advantageous

Education:

  • Ph.D. in a scientific field relevant to the life sciences, such as molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, or related disciplines

Certifications:

  • Active registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or eligibility to sit for the Patent Bar

Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities

  • Capacity to translate complex scientific concepts into legal language

  • Analytical mindset with a detail-oriented approach to legal and technical work

  • Comfortable collaborating across diverse professional teams and organizational levels
