Job Overview: A law firm in Washington, DC, seeks a skilled Patent Associate Attorney to join their team. The ideal candidate will have experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications, particularly in mechanical arts, with exposure to electrical and software technologies.

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute US and international patent applications in the mechanical arts, with some involvement in electrical and software technologies.
  • Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate searches and analyses.
  • Guide patent portfolio management and strategy.
  • Interact with clients to understand invention disclosures and provide patentability assessments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on litigation and IP transactional matters involving patents.
  • Assist in IP due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and licensing agreements.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to a State Bar (preferably Washington, DC or eligible for waiver) and ideally registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • 2-4 years of experience in patent prosecution, specifically in mechanical arts; experience with electrical and software technologies is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of patent law, USPTO rules, and procedures.
  • Superior academic credentials and a proven record of success.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Proficiency in drafting patent applications and office action responses.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Capability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
