Job Overview:
A prominent law firm is looking to expand its Employee Benefits team in Detroit, MI. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced attorney to handle a wide array of employee benefits matters, including ERISA, executive compensation, and employee welfare plans. The position is well-suited for an attorney with a strong background in tax law, employee benefit plan design, and related legal areas.

Duties:

  • Draft and provide counsel on the design of defined contribution plans, defined benefit plans, and employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs).
  • Advise on employee welfare plans and executive compensation programs.
  • Handle ERISA compliance issues and related tax matters.
  • Support merger and acquisition transactions concerning employee benefit plan issues.
  • Manage dispute resolution related to employee benefit matters.
  • Guide on regulatory matters affecting employee benefit plans.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and clients to develop strategies for compliance and plan design.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in employee benefits law, including ERISA and executive compensation.
  • Strong knowledge of tax law as it pertains to employee benefit plans.
  • Proven ability to handle complex legal issues and work with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with ESOP transactions and advising on ESOP matters is highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Bar in the state of Michigan.

Certifications:

  • Relevant certifications or additional training in employee benefits law or tax law is a plus.

Skills:

  • Deep understanding of ERISA and other applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Strong legal research and writing abilities.
  • Experience in employee benefits litigation and dispute resolution.
  • Ability to advise clients on complex matters involving executive compensation and retirement planning.
