Job Overview:
A prestigious law firm is seeking a highly qualified Patent Agent or Technical Specialist with expertise in life sciences. This role involves preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic intellectual property practice. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related field, and will contribute to patent-related matters for domestic and international clients.

Location:

  • Houston, TX

Duties:

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO
  • Conduct prior art searches and patentability analyses
  • Perform intellectual property (IP) due diligence for clients
  • Draft substantive client correspondence and provide counsel on patent matters
  • Instruct local counsel on foreign filings and office actions
  • Assist in patent clearance studies and patent-related opinion projects
  • Work with clients in life sciences fields to assess patentability and develop strategies
  • Convert prior provisional applications into utility applications and manage U.S. and foreign filings

Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of experience as a practicing patent agent in life sciences or 2 years of professional experience in life sciences
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in a biological field such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, or Biomedical Engineering
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Excellent verbal communication and organizational skills

Education:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in relevant biological fields

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the USPTO

Skills:

  • Expertise in life sciences-related patent prosecution and IP law
  • Strong analytical, communication, and drafting skills
  • Ability to manage complex projects with attention to detail
