A law firm seeks a skilled General Counsel Attorney to serve as city attorney for various cities in the San Antonio, TX area. This role will involve legal advisory duties, drafting municipal contracts, representing cities in municipal court, and handling a range of legal matters related to city operations. The successful candidate will be proficient in municipal law and have experience in handling criminal cases, code enforcement, and public information requests.

Duties

  • Provide legal counsel to city officials and employees on various legal issues.
  • Draft and review contracts, real estate documents, ordinances, resolutions, and other municipal-related legislation.
  • Attend and provide legal guidance during public meetings of city councils, boards, or commissions.
  • Conduct legal research, draft memoranda, and prepare legal opinions related to municipal law.
  • Represent the city in municipal court, handling criminal and civil cases including code enforcement and city ordinance violations.
  • Handle pre-trial hearings, defend against motions, and present cases before a judge or jury.
  • Manage and respond to requests for information under the Texas Public Information Act and draft responses.
  • Prepare and file briefs with the Texas Attorney General on relevant legal matters.
  • Train city personnel, including police officers and employees, on legal procedures and effective courtroom testimony.
  • Regularly attend municipal court sessions, public meetings, and client consultations.
  • Ensure timely and thorough completion of all legal tasks and manage case files.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle.
  • No arrests in the past five years.
  • Preferred experience in municipal law, district attorney’s office, or city attorney’s office.
  • Strong knowledge of criminal law, administrative law, and Texas Government Code.
  • Experience in civil and criminal procedures, as well as rules of evidence.
  • Ability to conduct thorough and effective legal research.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe applications.

Education

  • Doctoral Degree (Juris Doctorate) from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Must be licensed to practice law in Texas.
