Job Title: Employee Benefits Attorney

Job Overview:
A well-established law firm is seeking an experienced Employee Benefits Attorney to provide legal expertise on a wide range of employee benefits matters. This role involves advising clients on the design, compliance, and administration of retirement, health, and welfare plans and offering insights into regulatory requirements and corporate transactions. The position requires a deep knowledge of ERISA, tax-qualified retirement plans, and multiemployer plans, as well as experience in corporate restructuring and compensation matters.

Duties:

  • Draft, amend, and oversee the administration and governance of qualified retirement plans under Code § 401(a) and other tax-favored retirement plans (403(b), 457(b), etc.).
  • Correct documentary, administrative, and fiduciary errors in retirement plans, health and welfare plans, and executive compensation arrangements.
  • Provide expertise in benefits and compensation matters during corporate transactions, restructurings, and change-in-control situations.
  • Assist clients in the creation, documentation, and administration of ERISA health and welfare plan documents, including summary plan descriptions.
  • Advise on contractual and trust law matters related to multiemployer plans.
  • Analyze and counsel clients on multiemployer pension plan withdrawal liability.
  • Offer guidance on employment-related documents and 409A compliance.
  • Conduct due diligence and review Merger & Acquisition documents for ERISA-related considerations.
  • Understand and advise on non-qualified deferred compensation arrangements, including compliance with Code §§ 409A, 457, and 280G.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in employee benefits law.
  • Demonstrated ownership of projects and ability to work independently, while contributing effectively within a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong commitment to client service and ethical standards.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials.

Certifications:

  • Active Bar membership in Alaska.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in legal research, analysis, writing, and oral communication.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of clients and team members.
  • Familiarity with ERISA, tax codes related to employee benefits, and corporate transaction documentation.
  • Attention to detail and a high level of organizational skills.
