Job Overview: A law firm specializing in intellectual property law is seeking a Patent Prosecution Associate Attorney to join their team in Santa Monica, CA. The ideal candidate will have a solid academic background and legal experience, preferably in patent prosecution, with a focus on fields such as organic chemistry, molecular biology, gene editing, or related disciplines.

Duties:

  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications.
  • Conducting patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Providing intellectual property support for clients, including portfolio management and strategic counseling.
  • Conducting due diligence investigations and drafting opinions.
  • Interacting with clients and collaborating with colleagues on legal matters.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year of legal practice experience, preferably at a law firm.
  • PhD (or MD with research experience) in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, cell biology, immunology, molecular biology, microbiology, oncology, gene editing, gene therapy, or a related field.
  • Admission to the California Bar.
  • Member of (or eligible to be a member of) the California, Washington State, New York, or Washington D.C. Bar.
  • Member of (or eligible to be a member of) the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office bar.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • PhD in relevant scientific disciplines preferred.
  • Admission to the State Bar of California.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent prosecution procedures and strategies.
  • Ability to conduct legal research and analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
