A law firm seeks a talented and experienced Patent Agent to join its growing Intellectual Property team in Columbia, MD, with flexible options for remote or hybrid work. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in patent prosecution, technical analysis, and portfolio management, with a focus on mechanical, biomedical, and medical device patents.

Duties:

  • Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications across a variety of technical sectors.
  • Perform detailed patent searches and evaluations to assess patentability.
  • Advise clients on managing and strengthening their patent portfolios.
  • Prepare responses to office actions and communicate effectively with the USPTO.
  • Work alongside attorneys to align intellectual property strategies with client needs.
  • Provide technical expertise in mechanical, biomedical, and medical device-related patent matters.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience as a Patent Agent, particularly in patent prosecution.
  • Specialized knowledge or experience in mechanical, biomedical, or medical device technologies is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of USPTO filing procedures and patent laws.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and independently.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical field is required.
  • Advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD) in relevant fields are a plus.

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration to practice as a Patent Agent is required.
