Job Title: Energy Regulatory Associate Attorney

Job Location: Houston, TX

Job Overview:
A leading law firm is currently seeking a highly skilled Energy Regulatory Associate Attorney to join their team. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in energy law, particularly with advising clients on federal energy regulations, representing them before agencies like the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and navigating complex issues related to power generation, transmission, and electricity markets. This is an exciting opportunity for an attorney with a background in energy regulation, commercial agreements, and administrative litigation to work on high-profile, long-term projects that have a significant impact on the energy sector.

Duties:

  • Draft and negotiate key commercial agreements such as power purchase agreements (PPAs), interconnection agreements (IAs), transportation agreements, and LNG SPAs.

  • Represent clients in administrative proceedings before FERC, NERC, and regional transmission organizations (RTOs/ISOs).

  • Provide legal counsel on compliance with federal energy regulations, particularly in areas like renewable energy, natural gas, and electricity market design.

  • Handle regulatory compliance counseling and provide support for project development, finance, and mergers and acquisitions.

  • Engage in litigation involving regulatory approvals, audits, and enforcement actions for clients in the natural gas, liquid pipeline, and energy market sectors.

  • Advise on nuclear regulatory and safety matters, including compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations and handling nuclear facility licensing applications.

  • Draft legal memoranda, analyze energy regulations, and assist with due diligence for transactions and projects.

  • Manage multiple work streams and deliver results within short timeframes.

  • Work closely with senior attorneys and collaborate with internal subject matter experts.

  • Conduct legal research, prepare materials for business development, and assist with the training of junior associates.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in energy regulatory law, preferably with a background in transactional work.

  • Strong academic background, with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

  • Admission to the Texas Bar (or the ability to become admitted) and in good standing.

  • Experience with regulatory bodies like FERC, NERC, and NRC is highly preferred.

  • Proficient in drafting complex legal documents related to energy law.

  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines while maintaining a high standard of legal work.

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong professional relationships and work effectively within a team.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

  • Additional qualifications like an LLM or foreign equivalent are a plus.

Certifications:

  • Admitted to the Texas Bar (or ability to become admitted).
