Patent Prosecution Associate Attorney - Japanese Language Fluency Required

Job Overview:
A law firm based in Washington, DC is seeking a skilled Patent Prosecution Associate Attorney with at least 3 years of experience, particularly in handling U.S. patent applications. The ideal candidate will be bilingual in Japanese and English and will collaborate with the firm's Tokyo office on various patent matters. This is an exciting opportunity for an attorney with a strong background in patent prosecution, particularly in the electronics and software industries.

Duties:

  • Manage and prosecute U.S. patent applications related to electronics, software, and related technologies.
  • Work closely with international teams, especially the Tokyo office, to handle cross-border patent matters.
  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO.
  • Draft patent claims, specifications, and responses to office actions.
  • Conduct patent searches and provide opinions on patentability, freedom to operate, and validity.
  • Provide strategic guidance on patent portfolio development and management.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and assist with patent-related questions and concerns.

Requirements:

  • At least 3 years of direct experience in U.S. patent prosecution, specifically in electronics or software.
  • Fluency in both Japanese and English, with excellent communication skills in both languages.
  • USPTO registration as a Patent Attorney.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of organization.
  • Experience in handling complex patent cases and collaborating across different jurisdictions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Education:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field is required.

Certifications:

  • USPTO Patent Attorney registration is required.

Skills:

  • Strong technical and legal writing skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex patent matters and communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
  • Proficiency with patent prosecution processes and tools.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Japanese and English, both written and verbal.
