Job Title: Tax Attorney

Job Overview:
A prominent civil litigation law firm located in Atlanta, GA, is seeking a skilled Tax Attorney with 1-5 years of experience to join its Tax Practice Group. The firm represents a wide array of clients, including businesses, high-net-worth individuals, and non-profit organizations, offering legal counsel on various tax-related matters such as transactional planning and tax disputes. This position focuses on providing tax advisory services, transactional tax planning, and handling tax controversies, making it a diverse and challenging role for the right candidate.

Duties:

  • Transactional Tax Planning:

    • Offer advice on tax aspects of mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and business transactions.
    • Structure business formations, reorganizations, and equity transactions for tax efficiency.
    • Guide on federal, state, and local tax compliance matters, including sales tax, employment tax, and property tax.
    • Draft and review legal documents, including tax opinions, disclosures, and partnership/LLC agreements.
  • Tax Controversy & Audit Representation:

    • Represent clients during IRS and state tax audits, appeals, and administrative proceedings.
    • Address IRS notices, subpoenas, and information requests.
    • Assist with penalty abatements, voluntary disclosures, and tax compliance strategies.
    • Negotiate with IRS agents, appeals officers, and state tax authorities to resolve disputes.
  • Client Advisory:

    • Provide proactive tax advice to clients on business operations, individual tax matters, and regulatory changes.
    • Collaborate with attorneys across corporate, real estate, and estate planning practices to address tax implications.

Requirements:

  • 1-5 years of experience in tax transactions and IRS audits, preferably within law firms, accounting firms, or in-house legal departments.
  • Expertise in federal, state, and local tax matters, with a focus on corporate, partnership, and individual taxation.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Must be admitted to practice law in Georgia or be eligible for admission within 60 days of starting.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Georgia State Bar (or willingness to gain admission within the specified timeframe).

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury Regulations, and IRS administrative procedures.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and legal drafting skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex tax matters to clients and colleagues.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to resolve tax disputes effectively.
