A law firm is seeking a Patent Agent with a background in electrical engineering, biotechnology, or a related technical field for its Coral Gables office. The ideal candidate will support patent attorneys in preparing and prosecuting patent applications. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work in the Intellectual Property practice group, handling cutting-edge inventions, interacting directly with inventors, and guiding clients through the patent process.

Duties

  • Collaborate with inventors to identify and document new, patentable inventions.
  • Research existing patents to ensure clients’ inventions are innovative and have the potential for protection.
  • Draft detailed patent applications under the guidance of the patent team.
  • Track the progress of patent applications from submission to final grant, ensuring deadlines and milestones are met.
  • Regularly conduct ability searches to assess the patentability of inventions.
  • Address client inquiries and resolve any challenges related to the patent application process.
  • Respond to office actions and correspond with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to advance the application process.
  • Maintain consistent and efficient billing practices in line with required billable hour targets.

Requirements

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a related technical field is required. A Master’s or PhD is a plus.
  • Certifications: Must be registered with the USPTO, or actively pursuing registration.
  • Experience: Prior experience in patent law or a similar technical or engineering role is preferred.
