Job Title: Maritime Associate Attorney

Job Overview:
A prestigious law firm in Washington, DC, is seeking an accomplished Associate Attorney with a strong background or keen interest in maritime and admiralty law. This position involves engaging in multifaceted legal tasks related to maritime litigation, regulatory compliance, transactional matters, and international disputes. The role provides the opportunity to make a significant impact by advising clients, drafting legal documents, and representing them in various legal settings.

Duties:

  • Assist in maritime litigation, including vessel arrests, cargo claims, and contract enforcement.
  • Support all litigation stages, from discovery and motion practice to trial and appeal.
  • Conduct research and advise on maritime regulatory issues, including compliance with the Shipping Act, Jones Act, MARPOL, SOLAS, and other relevant codes.
  • Draft and review maritime agreements such as charter parties, bills of lading, and purchase/sale contracts.
  • Handle vessel documentation, registration, and flag state compliance.
  • Represent clients before courts, arbitration panels, and agencies such as the Coast Guard and Federal Maritime Commission.
  • Participate in settlement negotiations and other client advocacy efforts.
  • Conduct comprehensive legal research and draft briefs, pleadings, and legal memoranda.
  • Contribute to client development through networking and engagement in industry events.

Requirements:

  • Licensed to practice law in DC, MD, and/or VA.
  • Admission to federal courts in maritime districts preferred; willingness to gain relevant admissions if not already in place.
  • Maximum of 8 years of legal practice experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in maritime or related law preferred.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Bar admission in the specified jurisdictions.
  • Federal court admissions are a strong plus.

Skills:

  • Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
