Job Overview:

A law firm based in Detroit, MI, is seeking a highly skilled Tax Litigation Attorney with a robust background in tax court litigation and civil tax controversy. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience in this specialized field, including time spent in federal and state courts. Experience with refund litigation and interactions with key federal agencies such as the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the DOJ Tax Division is preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong business development abilities, exceptional case management skills, and a commitment to outstanding client service.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in tax litigation cases, including but not limited to refund litigation matters.
  • Develop and execute legal strategies to achieve favorable outcomes in tax disputes.
  • Manage all aspects of litigation from inception to resolution, including preparing pleadings, conducting discovery, and representing clients in court.
  • Supervise and coordinate with support staff and junior attorneys to ensure effective case management.
  • Maintain and expand a book of business, leveraging existing relationships and developing new client connections.
  • Handle multiple cases and deadlines concurrently while maintaining high responsiveness and attention to detail.
  • Interact with federal and state tax authorities, including the IRS, DOJ Tax Division, and U.S. Attorney’s Office, to resolve complex tax matters.
  • Provide exceptional customer and client service, addressing inquiries and concerns promptly and professionally.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in tax court litigation and civil tax controversy.
  • Demonstrated experience in refund litigation matters.
  • Experience working with the IRS Chief of Counsel, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the DOJ Tax Division is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage a business book with growth potential.
  • Proficient in managing multiple files and projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Michigan Bar is required.
