Job Title: Environmental Associate Attorney

Job Overview:
A prestigious law firm is seeking a full-time, partnership-track Environmental Associate Attorney to join its highly regarded Environmental Law practice in Washington, DC. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex and impactful environmental legal matters, including compliance counseling, permitting, project development, enforcement defense, and litigation, focusing on energy generation, oil and gas, and infrastructure development. Duties:

  • Provide legal counsel on environmental and natural resource issues, including regulatory compliance, permitting, and project development.
  • Represent clients in matters involving the Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, and related legal frameworks.
  • Handle agency rulemaking, enforcement defense, and litigation related to environmental law.
  • Support clients in obtaining necessary permits and regulatory authorizations for various projects.
  • Work collaboratively within a team on precedent-setting legal matters and provide high-quality, strategic legal advice.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring responsive communication and meeting clients' needs.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing and mentoring of junior associates.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 4-6 years of experience in environmental and natural resource law.
  • Expertise in compliance counseling, environmental permitting, and project development.
  • Strong interest and experience with the Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and Endangered Species Act.
  • Familiarity with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulations is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to clients.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity, good judgment, and the ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, client-focused atmosphere.
  • Active membership in the D.C. Bar is preferred, or the ability to gain membership within one year of joining.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Membership in the D.C. Bar, or eligibility to join within one year of employment.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in environmental law and regulatory frameworks, particularly related to energy, infrastructure, and natural resources.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
  • High level of professionalism and strong client relationship-building abilities.
  • Ability to work well in a diverse team environment.
