Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a Mid-Level Product Design and User Interface / Patent Agent to join their intellectual property practice in Philadelphia, PA. This individual will work closely with clients in technology-driven industries to draft and prosecute patent applications, specifically in software, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and networking. The candidate will serve as a key liaison between inventors and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), ensuring that patent filings accurately reflect cutting-edge innovations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in fields such as software, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), networking, and quantum technologies.
• Conduct detailed patentability assessments, prior art searches, and freedom-to-operate analyses.
• Collaborate with inventors and technical teams to understand innovations and develop strong patent strategies.
• Engage in client-facing discussions to explain legal strategies and patent processes clearly and effectively.
• Respond to office actions from the USPTO and foreign patent offices with well-reasoned legal arguments and amendments.
• Assist in portfolio management, including maintenance, reporting, and advising clients on the strategic value of patents.
• Coordinate with the litigation team to provide technical expertise during patent disputes.
• Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends to advise clients effectively.
• Maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including inventors, engineers, and corporate legal departments.
• Provide mentorship to junior patent agents and other legal staff in the firm.

Requirements:

• Minimum of 2+ years of relevant patent preparation and prosecution experience in a law firm or in-house legal department.
• Proficiency in drafting and prosecuting patent applications related to:
  • Software-related technologies
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) related technologies
  • IoT, networking, and related technologies
  • Quantum technologies
• JD is required with admission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
• Demonstrated success working with inventors, engineers, and other stakeholders to translate technical ideas into high-quality patent applications.
• Ability to handle a diverse client base and multiple patent portfolios simultaneously.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. and international patent laws and procedures.

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• JD from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

• Admission to the USPTO.
• Admission to at least one state bar (preferably Pennsylvania).
