Mid-Level Tax Exempt Organization Associate Attorney

Job Overview:

A prestigious law firm is seeking a highly qualified mid-level associate to join its Tax-Exempt Organizations team in the Washington, DC office. The ideal candidate will have experience or interest in working with a variety of tax-exempt organization matters, including tax compliance, nonprofit governance, and related legal issues. The role requires strong research, writing, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Location:

Duties:

• Advise clients on qualifying for and maintaining tax-exempt status.
• Provide counsel on restrictions regarding lobbying and political activities for tax-exempt organizations.
• Handle issues related to the unrelated business income tax (UBIT) and Section 4958 intermediate sanctions.
• Advise on the application of Chapter 42 excise tax rules to private foundations.
• Assist clients with charitable contribution deduction rules and impact investing strategies.
• Provide guidance on state nonprofit corporation laws and best practices in nonprofit governance.
• Conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda, briefs, and opinions on tax-exempt organization matters.
• Collaborate with team members and contribute to a wide range of tasks related to nonprofit and tax-exempt clients.

Requirements:

• 2-4 years of experience in tax-exempt organizations law or relevant practice areas.
• Interest or experience in handling tax-exempt organization issues, including compliance and nonprofit governance.
• Excellent academic credentials.
• Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
• Membership in the District of Columbia Bar or eligibility for admission on motion.

Education:

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

• Active license to practice law in the District of Columbia or eligibility for admission on motion.
