Job Title: Patent Prosecution and Litigation Patent Agent (Electrical Engineering & Software/Mechanical)

Job Overview:
A prominent law firm, located in Charleston, SC, is actively seeking a skilled and motivated Patent Agent to join its Patent Prosecution & Litigation Practice Group. This role focuses on the Electrical Engineering & Software Team or the Mechanical Team. The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of patent prosecution and litigation matters, utilizing their expertise in the field of electrical or mechanical engineering. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Duties:

• Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
• Manage and assist with patent litigation support, including document review and preparation for legal proceedings
• Collaborate with clients to provide patent-related counsel and guidance
• Review and analyze patent portfolios to develop strategic advice for clients
• Communicate effectively with clients and internal teams on complex patent issues
• Conduct patent searches and freedom-to-operate analyses
• Assist in the preparation and filing of patent-related documents such as office action responses and appeals

Requirements:

• A minimum of 3-6 years of patent prosecution experience, including drafting applications
• Registration with the USPTO
• Strong technical background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field (mathematics, physics, etc.)
• Experience with additional intellectual property areas is a plus
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related technical field

Certifications:

• USPTO registration required

Skills:

• In-depth knowledge of patent law and USPTO procedures
• Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications
• Familiarity with patent litigation procedures and supporting roles
• Proficiency in patent search and analysis tools
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
• Excellent client interaction and communication skills
